Maria Cruz Maldonado Rodriguez, 103 years, of Jersey City passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, November 29, 2017.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Maria moved to Jersey City, Hudson County more than 60 years ago. She devoted her life to helping others. Her most notable achievement was her more than 25 years of service for the Puerto Rican community organization and PACO association. For her outstanding work as a senior companion, she was honored by the Salvation Army, The New Jersey State Senate, Mayors Smith, Schundler, McCann and Fulop of Jersey City and in 2002 by President Bush. She was Mayor for a day during McCann's tenure.

She was predeceased by her parents, Emilio Cruz and Florencia Maldonado Montalvo and her great granddaughter's Erica Lopez Mulligan and Jeanette Matos. She was a beloved wife to the late Amador Rivera and subsequent to his death a beloved wife to the late Manuel Rodriguez. She is survived by her children, Carmen Rivera Rodriguez, Eulalia Rivera De Jesus, Maria M. Rivera Russotto, Maria V. Rivera Montalvo, Virginia Rivera, Amador Rivera, Jr. and Pedro Rivera. Sister of Ramonita Davila and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Monday, December 4, 2017 from 4-9pm at Greenville Memorial Home, 374 Danforth Ave. Jersey City. Funeral Mass will be offered Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 14 Greenville Ave. Jersey City. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

She babysat all of her grand children and manage to do a great job. However, Connie and i remember her famous crunchy hard boiled eggs and crackers for breakfast. Tiny pieces of shell would be in the eggs and she would tell us "eso son chageria eso estas bueno cometelo". Connie and I still get a kick about this jajaja. Thank you grandma Maria for doing all you could you will be missed.
